I always try to start the first day of the month off with a cheerful exclamation of “Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!”
They say it is supposed to bring you good luck for the whole month. I’ve heard variations (“Rabbits”; “Rabbit, Rabbit”; etc), but I’ve always preferred the trio, personally.
In an effort to boost our collective luck, I will bring you three Rabbit or Bunny Stories on the first of each month!
First up, book one in a set of three Sato the Rabbit stories. These books are absolute dreamy magical realism. A look at the reflection of the moon turns into an opportunity for Sato to scoop up that reflection and dry it on a clothes line allowing it to become a cozy blanket for a sleepy bunny boy. These books invite children and adults alike to look at the world around us with fresh eyes, discovering new ways of appreciating the everyday magic of nature.
Next, is a darling story, perfect for sending your little ones off to sleep peacefully. David Ezra Stein, as always, is able to communicate the constant that is a parent’s love for their child. So many bedtime, and bunny books for that matter, center around a mama and baby. This story adds a refreshing perspective with a sweet papa and his little bun. With words reset to the lullaby Hush, Little Baby, this could easily be sung to your own little bunnies.
Rabbit has lived a quiet life afraid to venture outside of his wheat field home. Dog has lived a long life of adventure, seeing the world from his motorbike. But he always stopped by to tell his tales to Rabbit, allowing the homebody to experience the world in the way he wishes he was brave enough to do himself. WARNING: Sweet old Dog dies leaving Rabbit his trusty motorbike and years of memories. In his grief, Rabbit honors Dog, and himself, by enjoying the world Dog brought to him through stories. A heartwarming ode to friendship and living a life well.
